Arizona Autism Support is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization
Tax ID #  20-5978189
Autism was added as a special education category in 1991, and by 2003 was the sixth most common special education category,
according to the CDC. Between 1994 and 2003 the number of children being served in special education for ASDs rose 600%.

To access free educational resources the first thing a parent needs to do is to get an eligibility
evaluation.

The school district doesn't become involved in providing services until the child is 3, but they will evaluate at 2 years and 9
months.

Each child who receives special education and related services must have an IEP. An Individualized Education Program (IEP)
describes the educational program that has been designed to meet that child's unique needs. Learn more about your role as an

Education
The IDEA guarantees all school-age children with learning disabilities (including autism) a "free and appropriate public
education," and a 1991 addendum to the act extended that guarantee to preschool children as well. The act also requires that
school districts draw up an individualized educational program (IEP) for every child in special education.

"While autism affects each child differently, most children with autism do not learn like typically developing children, by observing
and imitating what they hear and see others say and do. Children with autism lack the internal mechanism by which typical
children learn how to communicate, behave and play. Therefore, they must “learn how to learn.” As a result, the single most
important intervention for an a child with autism is a highly structured, specialized, intensive education plan

Ensuring appropriate effective education services for children with autism means first and foremost, educating ourselves and
each other.

Until we find the cure education is our best hope"
